Bar Council Capitalising on the Strengths of One Profession
"Capitalising on the Strengths of One Profession" The Employed Barristers' Committee (EBC) of the Bar Council will be hosting a seminar on Tuesday 13th February to highlight the role, value and character of the employed Bar and to provide an insight into the opportunities available within the employed sector. The Seminar, to be held in Gray's Inn, will be chaired by David Hobart, the Bar Council's Chief Executive, and will feature a strong panel of guest speakers: * Michael Butcher, Legal Director, Veolia Water UK Plc; * Andrew Hall QC, Chairman of the Criminal Bar Association; * Sir Ken Macdonald QC, Director of Public Prosecutions; * Jeremy Ogden, General Counsel, Global Retail & Commercial Banking, Barclays plc; and * Dame Juliet Wheldon, Chief Legal Adviser and Adviser to the Governor, Bank of England. Karen Squibb-Williams, Co-Chair of the EBC said: "We are delighted that such a senior panel will debate the opportunities for the legal services sector presented by the talent pool that is the employed bar. The diversity of in-house barristers is very healthy, in both the public and private sectors. It is important for us to raise awareness of what employed barristers do and their value to the profession." Stephen Collier, Co-Chair of the EBC emphasised the seminar's message: "The employed and self-employed Bar is one profession and has more to gain from working with each other. "We are also keen to promote the employed Bar as a first class career route for aspiring barristers, and have very clear objectives in expanding the range of pupillage training available and ensuring that opportunity is widened to admit all those of ability." Geoffrey Vos QC, Chairman of the Bar Council, is supportive of the work the Committee is doing: "There are around 2,850 employed barristers, who make up an intrinsic part of the profession as a whole. Both Karen Squibb-Williams and Stephen Collier are doing excellent work to ensure that people are aware of the importance of the employed Bar, and I thoroughly support this seminar, as one way of communicating that message." -ENDS- Notes to editors 1.
